ft. Portland’s Next Generation of Musicians

Twisted Whistle was formed in 2009, featuring the songwriting and powerful vocals of front person Kina Lyn Muir, and made complete by the very fine musicianship of Matt Franzen, Jeff Hays, and David Gerow. The band hit the ground running, boasting several years of many notable performances in the PNW and beyond. Described by Music Street Journal as a “blend of styles … bluegrass and country-tinged rock, with plenty of folk … “Psychobilly” really [doesn’t] begin to sum this band up, but they do have some of that attitude to go with it,” their debut album “Through the Mill” was named Best Americana Album of 2012 by Tupelo Honey KRVM. After a few more grand hurrahs, the band went their separate ways in late 2013, as Jeff and David each moved far, far away.

Kina Lyn and Matt continued to perform and record in many different capacities locally and all around, but also came into a new musical passion: Make Waves. Founded by Kina in 2020, Make Waves is a 501(c)3 which exists to support equity in music education for students and their teachers. What this support looks like is providing kids with instruments and connecting them to private music education, promoting and implementing diverse hiring practices, as well as creating paths to further accesibilty through music educator trainings.

Make Waves makes its home right here at The Alberta Abbey where Kina runs music educator trainings, as well as free music programming for local youth, and authors music education cirricula, and Matt fixes up donated instruments for local, young musicians in his workshop.

This exciting event will double as a fundraiser for Make Waves, opening with the support of several local, young musicians, and culminating with two sets of Twisted Whistle (trio), welcoming Jeff back home for a special reunion, and syrupy-sweet three-part harmonies.
